Electric power service in Dominican Republic (DR) is highly unreliable due to constant service interruptions; often up to 12 hour-long blackouts as frequent as 5 to 7 times per week in many areas. In last 50 years the problem has remained unchanged, and there are no signs of solutions on the horizon. Furthermore, the cost of electricity in DR keeps incrementing at a higher rate than the average of the Latin-American region, and has become among the highest in the World.
